what can i use to debug my mail server when pop3 or imap isnt working?

you can use fetchmail in verbose mode, try this: fetchmail -Ncvp pop3 -u myusername server.com
replacing data as appropriate. protocols can be pop2 pop3 apop or imap. the -c makes it not actually get the mail, just check if its there.
