What is the best list of security tools at the moment?

If you are running debian, you can install most of the useful tools in debian with this command:

apt-get install netcat ethereal nessus hping2 ettercap john nikto smb-nat airsnort kismet nbtscan gnupg ngrep nemesis lsof hunt stunnel paketto fragroute tethereal

Also check these packages out: fwbuilder httptunnel httpush lsof strace ltrace rsync

With those tools, your life will be much easier.
