How do I wash a feather comforter?

Short answer: If it is machine washable, run it through 2 consecutive wash cycles. In a non-commercial washing machine, my feather comforter tends to consolidate air pockets which keep portions above water for the wash cycle. No ammount of surface tension destroying soap or manual manupulation seems to help. The air pockets are removed during the spin cycle, so a second run will allow a thorough washing of the deflated comforter. This is much cheaper than driving to the cleaners, paying $19 and waiting a few days.
