In addition to this, we have available Ampex 440B, Ampex ATR-104, and Ampex 440-8 machines with headstacks for a wide variety of formats including 1/4" 2-track, full track and 4-track formats (the latter being recommended only for playback of old material), 1/2" 4-track and 3-track, and 1" 8-track. Some find the tone of the analogue systems best fit their music. Some find the reliability of the analogue systems and the ruggedness are an advantage for field recording. Of course, the analogue systems will result in considerably higher running cost due to the additional cost of tape and equipment handling; please contact for price information. We also have several Nagra portable decks for work in which extreme portability is required, as well as a briefcase-sized 4-track machine.
Because we believe that good monitoring is essential, since if you can't hear details you can't hear errors either, we use a pair of Magnepan monitoring speakers, driven by a vintage Harman-Kardon Citation II amplifier, as our main studio monitors. For field work, we normally use smaller monitoring speakers, but everything is checked over the Maggies before it leaves the door.
We also have the ability to transfer and mix 16mm magnetic film for small film production work and rock videos, as well as limited magfilm editing facilities. This facility doesn't get very much use these days and we can probably make you a very good price on such services.
For multitrack work, we have 4-track 1/2" and 8-track 1" decks available, as mentioned above. While this may seem like a small number of tracks, the recording methods we use are probably going to require fewer available tracks than you are accustomed to, and the fewer tracks on the tape, the better signal to noise ratio on each track. Currently we have set up a custom console based around older Studio-Z modules which has replaced our small Neotek and Opamp Labs consoles; it is still a work in progress at this writing but has already been used on several albums. We have a variety of vintage and modern outboard gear but again tend toward minimalism in choice of signal path. Please contact for additional information.
As you can see, we have a very wide variety of facilities, which corresponds well with a wide variety of available skills. As a result of being somewhat far away from major studio centers, we have had to provide numerous specialized services to meet local needs. Some of these services are of top quality, while some of them aren't the best, but in all cases we are honest about what we can and cannot do, and are willing to work with you to talk about what work is possible and how you can best get your job done, with the quality that you want and can afford.
